A cattle-era town turned fishing village

Fulton was founded in 1866 and named for George Ware Fulton, who built the large house now known as the Fulton Mansion in 1874–76 just south of town. The Handbook of Texas describes beef-packing plants in the cattle-boom years, a brief name change to Aransas City in 1888, and a turn toward tourism after 1920; it was incorporated in the 1970s, with tourism and fishing as its mainstays (Handbook of Texas: Fulton). The town sits on State Highway 35 along Aransas Bay.

Harvey came ashore here too

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Fulton on August 25, 2017, at Category 4 strength. The storm destroyed the Fulton Mansion's chimney and roof, letting water damage the interior, and destroyed the town's 1,500-foot fishing pier, which was rebuilt in 2021 (Wikipedia: Fulton). The National Weather Service's Harvey summary describes the storm going from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in about 40 hours (NWS Corpus Christi, Major Hurricane Harvey (Aug. 25–29, 2017)). That kind of rapid intensification leaves little time to prepare, which is why Fulton owners benefit from keeping gutters in good shape before the season, not scrambling at the last minute.

Facing the bay

Fulton Beach Road runs right along the water, and homes there take salt spray and wind directly. A few principles for bayfront gutters:

  • Use stainless fasteners and straps; plated steel stains and fails fast.
  • Pick a heavier-gauge seamless aluminum for the windward side.
  • Seal corners and end caps carefully and recheck them yearly.
  • Rinse troughs with fresh water a few times a year.

Raised homes and long drops

Many Fulton homes, especially newer ones near the water, are raised. Downspouts on those homes run a long way to the ground and need bracing at close intervals. Outlets should avoid emptying onto stairs, decks or parking areas under the house.

Sizing for downpours

Texas A&M AgriLife recommends one square inch of downspout per 100 square feet of roof and sizing for a 100-year storm (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Rainwater Harvesting: Conveyance (gutters and downspouts)). On bay homes with wide hip roofs, that typically means 6-inch gutters and several 3x4 downspouts.

Live oaks on the peninsula

Fulton shares the Live Oak Peninsula with Rockport, and many lots have the low, wind-shaped oaks the area is known for. Expect a spring leaf drop that fills gutters, plus catkins and acorns. A cleaning after the drop and guards on hard-to-reach eaves make maintenance manageable.

Historic character

The Fulton Mansion is a reminder that some of the area's houses have real architectural character. On older or historic-style homes, gutter choices can respect the design: half-round profiles, copper on homes built for it, or colors that blend with trim instead of contrasting. Downspouts can be placed at inside corners where they are less visible. Function still comes first, but there is usually a way to keep both.

Water on the lot

Bayfront lots in Fulton are low, and some are close to marsh or the shoreline. Gutters collect roof water into a few points, so those discharge points need planning. Extensions onto lawn or gravel, away from the foundation and the neighbors, are usually enough. Avoid routing runoff straight onto bulkheads or into the bay, where it carries roof grit and debris with it.

Common Fulton gutter projects

  • Corrosion-resistant replacements on bayfront homes.
  • Braced downspouts on raised homes.
  • Pre-season checks of hangers and seams.
  • Spring cleanings and guards under live oaks.
  • Repairs after fronts and tropical storms.

Q & A

Fulton gutter questions

What should I do with my gutters when a storm is forecast?

Clear any debris so outlets can drain, check that downspouts are attached and secure loose sections. Do not climb ladders once wind picks up. Afterward, photograph any damage before cleanup.

How should gutters be set up on a Fulton Beach Road home?

Seamless aluminum in a heavier gauge, stainless hangers and straps, carefully sealed corners and downspouts braced at close intervals. Rinse with fresh water periodically.

Do raised homes in Fulton need special downspouts?

They need longer downspouts that are strapped at close intervals and routed away from stairs and parking areas underneath. Larger 3x4 downspouts are stiffer and clog less.

When is the best time to check gutters before storm season?

Late spring, after the live oak leaf drop and before the busiest part of hurricane season. Clean, check hangers and seams and make sure downspouts are secure.

Are copper gutters a good idea on an older Fulton home?

Copper handles salt air well and suits some historic designs. It must be kept away from aluminum and galvanized steel, and its runoff can stain light-colored surfaces.

Is Fulton part of Rockport?

No. They are separate towns, though many people call the area Rockport-Fulton. Estimate requests are welcome from both.
