Gutter Replacement for Coastal Bend Homes
When rust is eating through seams, hangers are pulling out of soft wood or the system overflows every time it rains hard, patching one spot at a time stops making sense. A full replacement resets size, fasteners and drainage at once.
- Corroded or pitted metal
- Failed seams along the house
- Undersized builder systems
Repair or replace?
Repair makes sense for one bad corner or a loose section on a sound system. Replacement usually wins when leaks show up at many joints, the metal is pitted or rust-stained, hangers are failing in several places, or the gutters were too small for the roof from day one.

Signs your gutters are finished
- Pinholes and pitting. Near salt water, older steel gutters rust from the inside where wet debris sits. Once you can see daylight through the bottom of a trough, it is past patching.
- Rust or white powder streaks. Orange streaks on steel and chalky white residue on aluminum point to corrosion at seams and fasteners.
- Leaks at many joints. Sealing one joint is normal upkeep. Sealing every joint every year means the system is aging out.
- Sagging between hangers. Spikes and ferrules loosen as fascia ages. If several sections sag and hold water, the fastening system has failed.
- Overflow even when clean. If clean gutters still overflow in a normal storm, they are undersized or short on downspouts. New troughs sized correctly fix that; resealing old ones does not.
- Storm damage along a full side. Wind can peel a run off the fascia or bend it beyond straightening. See storm and hurricane gutter damage.
What a full replacement covers
- Remove the old system. Old troughs, hangers, spikes and downspouts come down and are hauled away.
- Inspect the fascia. Once the gutters are off, the board behind them is visible for the first time in years. Soft wood should be replaced before new gutters go on. See fascia and soffit.
- Check the roof edge. Drip edge should direct water into the new trough rather than behind it.
- Re-size. A replacement is the chance to fix a builder system that was always too small: 6-inch troughs, bigger downspouts, extra outlets near valleys.
- Install and drain. New seamless runs, hangers at tight spacing, downspouts strapped against wind and extensions that carry water well away from the slab.
Why corrosion is the local replacement driver
In many inland markets, old gutters fail from ice, leaves or simple age. Around Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces Bay, Aransas Bay and the islands, salt is the slow-moving cause. Airborne salt settles on roofs and gutters, and wet debris holds it against the metal. Dissimilar metals make it worse: a copper flashing or a bare steel screw touching an aluminum gutter sets up galvanic corrosion, and the aluminum loses. A replacement estimate should name the fastener material and keep different metals apart. The materials page covers this in detail.
Replacement during or after a reroof
Replacing gutters at the same time as a roof is efficient because the roofer can set drip edge correctly and the gutter installer can fasten to clean fascia. If the roof was just replaced, check that the new drip edge sits properly over the gutter's back edge. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that gutter repair or replacement does not by itself require a windstorm inspection in the designated catastrophe area, while most roof replacements do (Texas Department of Insurance, what you need to know about windstorm inspections). If both are happening, your roofer and agent should sort out the roof paperwork.
After a storm
If your gutters are being replaced as part of a storm claim, document the damage before anything is removed: wide photos of each side, close-ups of bent sections, and photos of where the gutter pulled away from the fascia. Talk to your adjuster before disposal. The Texas Department of Insurance recommends getting at least three written bids and avoiding contractors who go door to door after storms (Texas Department of Insurance, making repairs after a storm).
Getting more from a replacement
Because the old system is coming down anyway, a replacement is the cheapest moment to change things that bothered you about the old one. Move a downspout that drained across the driveway. Add an outlet at the valley that always overflowed. Switch to larger 3x4 downspouts so seed pods and live oak leaves pass instead of plugging elbows. Choose a color that matches new trim. Add guards while the troughs are clean. Each of these is easy on a fresh install and awkward as a retrofit.
It is also the right time to fix how water leaves the property. If the old downspouts emptied into flower beds against the slab, plan extensions or buried lines with the new system. The downspouts and drainage page covers the options, and the flat-lot drainage guide explains why water lingers on low, level coastal lots.
Finally, think about access. Raised homes on the islands, two-story homes in newer subdivisions and houses with tight side yards all take more setup. That affects scheduling and scope, so mention it in the notes when you send the form.
Comparing replacement estimates
Ask every estimate to list linear feet, trough size, metal and gauge, hanger type and spacing, fastener material, downspout count and size, discharge plan, old-gutter removal and how fascia surprises will be handled. The estimate factors page walks through each line so you can read two estimates side by side.
Scoping it: read what a full replacement scope includes on the estimate-factors page. It explains what changes the job, not what it costs.

Gutter Replacement: questions homeowners ask
How do I know it is time to replace instead of repair?
Replacement usually makes sense when leaks appear at many joints, the metal has pinholes or heavy rust, several sections sag, or clean gutters still overflow. One bad corner on an otherwise sound system is a repair.
Why do gutters corrode faster near the bay?
Airborne salt settles on metal and stays wet under leaves and grit, which speeds corrosion. Mixing metals makes it worse. A bare steel screw or copper flashing touching aluminum causes galvanic corrosion, where the aluminum is eaten first.
Is fascia replacement part of a gutter replacement?
Only if the board is damaged. You often cannot tell until the old gutters come down. Ask how the estimate handles soft fascia, whether it is priced per foot or as a separate change, so there are no surprises.
Can I change gutter size when I replace?
Yes, and it is often the best reason to replace. Moving from 5-inch to 6-inch troughs and from 2x3 to 3x4 downspouts can solve chronic overflow on large or steep roofs.
Do I need a windstorm certificate for new gutters?
The Texas Department of Insurance lists repairs or replacement of gutters among projects that do not require a windstorm inspection. Roof replacements usually do. Ask your insurance agent if your project includes roof work.
Should I replace gutters before or after a new roof?
At the same time is ideal. If the roof comes first, the gutters often come down anyway. If the gutters come first, the roofer has to work around them. Coordinate so the drip edge laps into the new gutter.
What happens to the old gutters?
They should be removed and hauled away as part of the job. Confirm that removal and disposal are written into the estimate rather than left as an extra.
Can I keep my old downspouts and only replace the troughs?
Sometimes, if the downspouts are the right size, solidly strapped and free of corrosion. In practice, old 2x3 downspouts are often undersized for the roof and rusted at the straps, so most replacements swap them at the same time for a matched, larger system.
How long should new gutters last on the coast?
Lifespan depends on metal, gauge, fasteners, exposure and upkeep. Keeping troughs clean, rinsing salt film occasionally and fixing small leaks before they spread helps any system last longer. Be cautious of anyone promising a specific number of years.
