Gutter Repair in Corpus Christi

Most gutter problems are small when they start: a dripping corner, a section that dips, a downspout that pulled loose in the last blow. Caught early, they are repairs. Left alone, they rot fascia and stain the slab edge.

  • Leaking corners and seams
  • Sagging or pulled-away runs
  • Loose or missing downspouts

Quick check after a hard rain

  • Water dripping from a corner or seam rather than the outlet
  • Overflow at one low spot while the rest drains
  • A gap between the gutter and the fascia
  • Downspouts disconnected, crushed or swinging
  • Rust or white powder streaks under a joint

The repairs that come up most around Corpus Christi

Leaking corners and end caps

Mitered corners and end caps are the weak points of any system, seamless or not. Sealant hardens and cracks after years of sun and heat, and salt film accelerates the process. A proper repair removes the old sealant, cleans the metal, and reseals with a gutter-grade product rather than smearing new caulk over old. If a corner has corroded through, it gets a new miter.

Sagging sections

Sags hold water, and standing water means debris, mosquitoes and faster corrosion. The usual causes are failed spikes, hangers spaced too far apart, or soft fascia that no longer holds a screw. Texas A&M AgriLife recommends hangers roughly every three feet (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Rainwater Harvesting: Conveyance (gutters and downspouts)). Re-hanging a sagging run with hidden hangers at that spacing, into solid wood, is a typical fix.

Wrong pitch

Gutters should fall gently toward the outlets. AgriLife suggests about 1/16 inch per foot (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Rainwater Harvesting: Conveyance (gutters and downspouts)). Settled hangers or a sloppy original install can leave a trough flat or even sloping the wrong way. Re-pitching is a common repair that stops standing water.

Pulled-away gutters

When a gutter separates from the house, water pours behind it, straight onto the fascia and down the wall. Often the fascia behind is soft. Re-fastening into rotted wood will not last, so the wood is repaired first. See fascia and soffit.

Downspout problems

Downspouts get knocked loose by wind, lawn equipment and ladders. Elbows clog with leaves and seed pods. Straps rust off near the bay. A repair visit can re-strap downspouts, clear elbows, replace crushed sections and add extensions so water stops pooling at the slab. If your downspouts are simply too small, see downspouts and drainage.

Minor storm damage

Wind-blown branches, flying debris and ladders dent troughs and bend corners. Small dents can sometimes be worked out; bent runs that hold water are usually replaced section by section. If a whole side came loose in a tropical storm, that is a bigger job, covered on the storm and hurricane damage page.

Repair versus replacement

A repair makes sense when the system is the right size, the metal is sound, and the problem is local. Replacement makes more sense when leaks appear at many joints, metal is pitted or perforated, several sections sag, or the system overflows even when clean. A fair estimate will tell you which side of that line you are on and why. If the answer is replacement, the replacement page explains what that involves.

What to note before you request an estimate

  • Where exactly the water comes out: corner, seam, middle of a run, behind the gutter.
  • Whether it happens in every rain or only in heavy downpours.
  • Any rust, white residue or peeling paint below the gutter.
  • Soft or discolored wood along the fascia.
  • Whether downspouts discharge at the slab or carry water away.

Photos taken during a rain are especially helpful. Leaks that only happen in hard Gulf downpours often point to capacity rather than a bad seam.

Small fixes that prevent big ones

Many repair calls trace back to the same few habits. Gutters that are cleaned only after they overflow tend to hold wet debris against the metal for months, which speeds corrosion near salt water. Downspouts that end at the slab keep the soil beside the foundation wet. Ladders leaned against the front lip bend the trough and crack sealant. Fixing the habit is often cheaper than fixing the damage:

  • Clean on a schedule that follows your trees. Under live oaks, that usually means a spring cleaning after the old leaves drop; the live oak leaf drop guide explains the timing.
  • Rinse gutters and downspouts with fresh water once in a while if you live close to the bay or beach, so salt film does not build up.
  • Add extensions so every downspout discharges several feet from the slab.
  • Use a ladder standoff so the ladder rests on the roof or wall, not on the gutter.

When a repair visit finds several of these issues at once, it is worth asking for a written list ranked by urgency so you can plan the rest.

Safety

Gutter repair means ladder work at the roof edge, often on a hot, windy day. If your home is two stories or raised on pilings, or the ground below is uneven or sloped, it is a job worth handing off. See the ladder safety guide for the coastal specifics.

Q & A

Gutter Repair: questions homeowners ask

Why do my gutter corners keep leaking?

Corners and end caps rely on sealant, which hardens and cracks after years of heat and sun. Salt film near the bay speeds that up. A lasting repair removes old sealant, cleans the metal and reseals it properly. Corroded corners need a new miter.

Can a sagging gutter be fixed without replacing it?

Usually, if the trough itself is sound. The run is re-hung with hidden hangers into solid fascia, about every three feet, and re-pitched toward the outlet. If the fascia is soft, that wood is repaired first.

Water is running behind my gutter. What causes that?

Common causes are missing or short drip edge, a gutter that has pulled away from the fascia, or a trough mounted too low. Water behind the gutter rots fascia quickly, so it is worth fixing soon.

Is a gutter that overflows in heavy rain broken?

Not necessarily. If it overflows only in intense downpours, it may be undersized or short on downspouts. If it overflows in light rain too, look for clogs, a flat or backward pitch, or a blocked elbow.

Can dented gutters be repaired?

Small dents that do not affect drainage can often be left or worked out. A bent section that holds water or pulls away from the house is usually replaced. Many seamless runs can have one section replaced at a corner or outlet.

How do I stop downspouts from blowing loose?

Strap them to the wall every few feet with corrosion-resistant straps and fasteners, and secure the connection at the outlet. On raised homes with long drops, extra straps are worth it.

Is it safe to fix gutters myself?

Simple ground-level work, like adding an extension, is easy. Ladder work at the roof edge carries real fall risk, especially on two-story or raised homes, in heat, wind or on soft ground. Many homeowners leave anything above the first floor to a crew.

What is the white powder on my aluminum gutters?

Chalky white residue on aluminum is usually oxidation, often worse where salt film and wet debris sit. Light oxidation is cosmetic. Heavy residue around a fastener or seam can mean galvanic corrosion from a mismatched screw or flashing, which is worth a closer look before it perforates the metal.

Will a repair void a gutter warranty?

Check the paperwork from whoever installed the system. Some installer warranties require that they do the repair. If the gutters are older and out of warranty, this is not a concern.
