When to Clean Gutters in Corpus Christi: The Live Oak Calendar
If your gutter cleaning is on a fall schedule, it may be months off. Under live oaks, the big shed comes in late winter and spring. Here is a calendar built around local trees and local rain.
The live oak exception
Live oaks are the signature shade tree of the Coastal Bend. Texas A&M AgriLife's plant diagnostic lab explains that live oaks, sometimes called evergreen oaks, are not true evergreens. They drop old leaves as new leaves emerge in spring, and the old leaves often yellow and spot as temperatures begin to rise in late January and February (Texas A&M AgriLife Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab, live oak spring leaf drop). The lab says it fields calls about "dying" live oaks every year from March through early May, and that this shedding is a normal part of the tree's cycle (Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab, annual Texas live oak leaf drop).
For gutters, that means the biggest single load of leaves arrives in spring. Individual trees drop at slightly different times, so a street lined with live oaks can shed over several weeks.
A month-by-month calendar
| Months | What is happening | Gutter task |
|---|---|---|
| January–February | Live oak leaves start yellowing; cool fronts bring wind | Quick look after fronts; avoid a full cleaning yet if oaks overhang |
| March–May | Main live oak drop, catkins and pollen | Main cleaning once most leaves are down; flush downspouts |
| May–June | Rain picks up; hurricane season begins June 1 | Pre-season check: hangers, seams, straps, extensions |
| July–August | Heat, palm seed and occasional tropical rain | Ground-level checks during rain; clear palm debris |
| September–October | Wettest stretch of the year | Watch for overflow; clear storm debris |
| November–December | Some deciduous trees drop; fronts return | Light cleaning if you have pecans, ashes or other deciduous trees nearby |
NOAA normals for the Corpus Christi airport show May and June averaging about 3.4 and 3.6 inches of rain, and September about 5.4 inches, the wettest month (NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals, Corpus Christi International Airport). NOAA's National Hurricane Center lists the Atlantic season as June 1 through November 30 (NOAA National Hurricane Center, tropical cyclone climatology). A spring cleaning right after the oak drop lines up neatly ahead of both.
Homes without live oaks
Not every lot has oaks. Newer subdivisions on the Southside, in Calallen or across the bay in Portland may have young street trees or none at all. Those gutters still collect shingle grit, blown sand, bird nesting material and debris from neighboring yards. A yearly cleaning, often in spring, keeps downspouts open. Palms add their own schedule: fronds and seed can drop through the warm months, so homes with palms close to the roof benefit from a mid-summer check.
Reading your own trees
The calendar above is a starting point. Your own trees set the real schedule. Watch the live oaks that overhang the roof: when the canopy has turned mostly fresh green and the yellow leaves have stopped raining down, the shed is largely over. AgriLife's lab suggests looking for new buds at the base of the old leaves as a sign of the normal cycle (Texas A&M AgriLife Texas Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab, live oak spring leaf drop). If neighboring trees drop on different weeks, a single cleaning after the last one is usually more efficient than chasing each tree.
Signs your gutters need attention now
- Water spilling over the front during moderate rain.
- Plants or grass sprouting in the trough.
- Downspouts that trickle instead of gush.
- Sagging sections where wet debris adds weight.
- Mosquitoes around the eaves after rain.
Doing it right
- Wait until most of the spring shed is down so one visit catches it.
- Remove debris from troughs, corners and behind hangers.
- Flush each downspout with a hose and clear elbows.
- Rinse the troughs to wash out grit and salt film.
- Check pitch: water should run to the outlets, not sit.
- Look for loose hangers, seam drips and soft fascia while you are up there.
Disposing of debris
In Corpus Christi, the City's Solid Waste Services lists the brown or green cart for trash and yard waste with weekly collection, and brush and bulky items for curbside pickup twice a year (City of Corpus Christi, Solid Waste Services). Bagged leaves and gutter sludge fit the weekly cart. Other Coastal Bend cities run their own programs.
Should guards change the calendar?
Guards reduce how much reaches the trough, but live oak leaves and catkins collect on top. Most guard owners still do a surface cleaning after the spring drop. See the guards and debris guide for a comparison.
DIY or hire it out?
Spring weather is usually kinder for ladder work than summer heat, but wet leaves on a roof are slippery and two-story or raised homes add risk. The ladder safety guide covers what to watch. If you would rather not climb, request a free estimate for gutter cleaning; the estimate factors page explains what changes the scope.
Tired of the spring climb? Weigh gutter guards against the ladder risks.

Quick answers
When is the best time to clean gutters in Corpus Christi?
For homes under live oaks, late spring after most old leaves have dropped. Texas A&M AgriLife notes the shedding often starts in late winter and continues into spring. A pre-hurricane-season check in early summer is also wise.
Why are live oaks dropping leaves in spring?
It is normal. AgriLife explains live oaks shed old leaves as new leaves emerge in spring. Look for new buds at the leaf bases; if they are present, the tree is following its usual cycle.
Do I need a fall cleaning too?
Only if you have deciduous trees nearby, such as pecans or ashes, that drop in fall, or if storms have blown debris onto the roof. Many live oak homes find spring is the main cleaning.
How many times a year should gutters be cleaned?
Most homes do well with one thorough cleaning plus a pre-season check. Heavy live oak or palm cover can justify an extra visit. Homes with few trees may need just one.
Can I put gutter debris in my yard waste cart?
In Corpus Christi, the city lists yard waste in the brown or green cart with weekly collection. Bag wet debris so it does not spill. Check your own city’s rules elsewhere in the area.
